Teaching Abroad Part Two: Week Two

Updated: Dec 15, 2022

This week went by fast. Similar to last week, there was no grand event or catastrophic events that I witnessed. We did celebrate Saint Patrick's Day though, which the children had never done before, and loved getting to learn about. I convinced the children that a leprechaun comes during the night and we needed to set up traps to try and catch him. Between an eight, five, and twenty-three-year-old, we were able to create two semi-sturdy traps filled with lots of chocolate and paper four-leaf clovers that we drew. Sadly, Italy lacked heavily in the real four-leaf clovers, so we prayed the paper ones would be justified.

The children were so excited at the thought of catching a real-life leprechaun that they couldn't wait to go to bed that night. The absolute best part of the day, and don't judge me here, was walking downstairs and seeing the looks on both of their faces at what was inside their playroom. It was no leprechaun.

Instead, a very naughty leprechaun had not only escaped from their traps and taken all of their chocolate, but he also DESTROYED their playroom and made such a mess that the children were at a loss for words. I did warn the children that some leprechauns weren't always good ones, and this one proved me right. He even left them a note telling them that he considered painting their faces green, but he had no more paint...part of me wished he would've gone through with it. Nonetheless, the children couldn't believe that a leprechaun had been in their house and was determined that they would catch him next year and spent the next day drawing up traps for him. We ended the celebration with chocolate eggs and golden coins for everyone.

I was also introduced to a new food this week, rabbit. Did I try it? No. I did smell it though, and I can't say it's at the top of the list of my favorite scents. The cheese and pasta though never disappoint me, and I can assure you I never go hungry in this house.

That's all I have for this week. See you next Sunday!
