Week seven, and this week is my new favorite because I had my first visitor come out! While it was only for a few days, Seth and I explored all of Bilbao, Mundaka, Bakio, and Bermeo. I’m not sure if I’m the best tour guide, but I had an amazing time showing him around where I live and what life is like for me in Spain.
We visited the Guggenheim, and while I don’t know a ton about art, I do find it interesting and can admire it from a creative point of view. It also made it much easier because Seth studied art and knows so much more than me, so he was my pocket dictionary while we explored the museum and all its beautiful art and admired the elaborate architecture.
I always try and keep an open mind when walking through art museums, I’m no artist, maybe with words, but not in other mediums. So, when we waited in line for almost thirty minutes to walk into a box with a bunch of balls and lights, was I confused, a little, did it amuse me like a piece of string and yarn does to a cat, absolutely. There were many beautiful pieces, some I loved, others I was a bit unclear about what the picture was meant to be, or why I paid money to come inside and look at it, but nonetheless. Art is a beautiful medium we can express ourselves with and I’m a firm believer that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So, while I saw a brown blob of clay that looked like poop, maybe someone else saw a stone, or it inspired them to become the next Picasso.
It was non-stop for three days straight and we easily reached our walking goals every day, especially at San Juan. If you’ve ever seen Game of Thrones or House of The Dragon, then you will recognize San Juan as Dragonstone from the show. With a total of 241 steps, not including the steep “mountain”, hill to get back up, we trekked up to the small church and made sure to place our right foot into the footprint to ensure good luck, according to Google anyways. It was raining and the pathway was slippery and wet so considering no one fell or was seriously injured is proof enough for me that we received some sort of luck.
One of my favorite highlights was waiting for the bus in Bakio and all the children walking home and passing me and Seth. They gave the initial wave and said hello, before whipping their head back around with the whites of their eyes showing, staring at Seth followed by the grins that covered their faces after they realized he was with me. As hard as it was for them to believe, now I have physical proof that I do in fact have a boyfriend, which I already know will be the talk of all my students for the next week.
I’m sad our adventure was so short, but it was filled with delicious food, walking through markets, windy bus rides, exploring the beaches, and much more. Come back soon,
Seth, I miss you already.
