Spain Week Four

One month in Spain, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to saying that I live here. Unlike Oklahoma, the weather here actually feels like fall, and while the leaves haven’t changed colors yet, the weather is so nice that no one stays inside. Most days/evenings everyone is out walking the streets, having picnics in the parks and along the port, or enjoying a nice glass of wine in the small cafes. I have still yet to find a good wine after my mishap last week…but I haven't given up hope yet.

With Halloween approaching, we’ve started to decorate the classrooms and the children have talked nonstop about what costumes they will be wearing. Unlike in the US, where on Halloween it is common to dress as anything, here in Spain it is typically just scary costumes. I did have a student tell me that they were dressing up as a Michael Jackson zombie, which now is the costume I’m most excited to see. While Halloween is not celebrated as big as it is in the states, it’s been exciting preparing for all the fun crafts and decorations at school for this week.

The only highlight from this week, if you would even call it that, is I hot glued my index finger and thumb together while helping the students with their rockets. After watching the students struggle so much last week with the hot glue gun, I decided this week I would step in and help…being the adult I made sure all the students watched me use the hot glue gun properly and told them I would be helping them to make sure no one got hurt. I should’ve known, me being me, that something was bound to happen and sure enough I was attempting to help these two students glue four sticks together and as one went to fall, I didn’t even hesitate. I grabbed the stick to keep it from falling but in doing so I also grabbed right where the glue and gun held it together and glued my fingers together. The worst part wasn’t even the burn, while it did hurt, very badly, it was remembering that I was in a classroom full of young students and couldn’t yell the first few words that came to mind. All is well though, but my fingers did get second-degree burns…so I had my first reason to go to the pharmacy, which I’m sure won’t be my last.

Burned fingers and all though, it’s been a fun week. Now time to prepare for Halloween, Hasta Luego!
