Hola! My last round of visitors made their way to the Basque country, and of course, the weather had to show off for them, as it always does when visitors arrive. We packed our four days in with the quaint small coastal towns of Bermeo, Mundaka, Bakio, and even Bilbao. My favorite thing about where I live is how no one expects the area to be so green with mountains covering any piece of land you see and the ocean just below. It definitely was not what I thought Spain looked like, and my visitors are always shocked too when they first arrive!
My favorite part of the entire visit was when I got to bring Nicole with me to school to teach. The students flocked her like seagulls to a French fry and had a million questions to ask. We showed them pictures from our life back in the States, explained how we met at a bookstore where we went to school and have been best friends ever since, and more. The next day when I came back without Nicole all of the students were disappointed because they thought that I was taking over as the head English teacher in Itxasne’s place and Nicole was to be my assistant…oh the look of disappointment when they realized their wishes weren’t coming true. I told them Nicole and I could make trips out to visit in the future and that sufficed them for now.
Sadly, Nicole and Dakota’s time here was over before we knew it and they headed off for their next adventure while I stayed home and prepared for my last six weeks here in Spain. I can’t believe I only have six weeks left here in Spain, this is the longest I’ve ever been away from home and as I near the last few weeks of my time here it’s a bittersweet feeling.
This past weekend, unknowingly on earth day, I went on a walk to Bermeo’s little hidden beach. The tide was low too, so I was able to explore more of the cavernous areas below the cliffs and I even watched a man dive into the tide pools to catch a squid. He then beat it to death on the rocks after, so what I thought was a cute moment of a man catching his dinner, ended up being me nauseated by the sound of the squid hitting the rocks over and over. But the weather was amazing, and I was in awe of the place I’ve called home for the last eight months. Until next week, Agur!
